INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AS A PANACEA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Information technology (IT) has emerged as a basic necessity to humanity considering its applicability in all ramifications. This study presents a comprehensive literature review on the IT in promoting sustainable development in Nigeria. The study is aimed at assessing the role of IT in sustainable development actualization. A systematic review approach was adopted by analyzing existing literature to identify key findings, challenges, and opportunities associated with leveraging IT for sustainable development in the Nigerian context. By conducting a thorough review of relevant scholarly articles, reports, and publications, due consideration is given to the potential of IT in driving sustainable development. However, the literature reveals challenges such as the digital divide, inadequate digital infrastructure, limited digital skills, cybersecurity risks, and the need for comprehensive policy frameworks. Bridging the digital divide, improving digital infrastructure, enhancing digital skills through capacity-building initiatives, strengthening cybersecurity measures, and developing robust policy frameworks were recommended to fully leverage the potential of IT for sustainable development in Nigeria. The study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by providing valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with IT for sustainable development. The findings can inform policymakers, researchers, and practitioners in making informed decisions and designing strategies to harness the transformative power of IT for sustainable development in Nigeria. Overall, this study underscores the importance of integrating IT into Nigeria's sustainable development agenda and highlights the need for concerted efforts to address the identified challenges and maximize the benefits of IT in achieving sustainable development goals.
