EXAMINING THE IMPACT OF REPOSITIONING SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AMONG NIGERIAN CITIZENS

Abstract

This paper is an empirical study examine the impact of repositioning social studies education towards sustaining economic development among citizens in Nigeria colleges of Education. The study adopted descriptive survey design. Two research questions were posed while two hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The population for the study was 4,192 NCE full time program in social studies department federal college of education Zaria. The NCE students that were used for the population of study were NCE1 with 1,295. Students NCE2 with 946, NCE3 with 1, 951 students Federal College of Education, Zaria 2022/2023 academic session. The Taro and Yemane's formular was used to determine the minimum sample size of three (300) hundred study. With random and stratified selected for the study. The instrument that was used for data collection was titled. Repositioning social studies education for sustainable economic development among Nigeria Citizens Questionnaire" (RSSESDC-Q).  The Crobbach . Alpha was used to determine the reliability of the instrument which yield a correlation coefficient of 0.05 data collected were analyzed using mean scores and standard deviation to answer the research questions while the hypotheses were tested using chi-square at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed that the existing social studies curriculum in Nigeria does not adequately equipped Nigerian citizens with the necessary knowledge, skills, values, attitudes for active participation in the economy. Based on the findings the study recommend among other that lecturers in college of education, should motivate and inculcate acceptable norms of their job with maximum efficiency.  The National Association of curriculum organization of Nigeria (CON) should not relent in their efforts in creating the awareness through organizing of workshops, symposium, talk show, conference and other sensitizing exercises for social studies teachers.
