AWARENESS AND ADOPTION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FOR SERVICE DELIVERY IN POLYTECHNIC LIBRARIES IN SOUTH-SOUTH, NIGERIA

Abstract

The study investigated the awareness and adoption of artificial intelligence for service delivery in Polytechnic Libraries in South-South, Nigeria. Three research questions were raised and analysed in this study. Since the survey design addresses people's opinions and attitudes, it was chosen for this research project.The population of this study consisted of eighty-four (84) librarians in fifteen (15) polytechnics in South-South, Nigeria. The total enumeration sampling techniqLibraryue was used in the study because total population is relatively small. This study employed a questionnaire as its instrument for data collection. Descriptive statistics of frequency count, percentage and mean were employed to analyse the data obtained. This study simply revealed that the adoption of AI is low in Polytechnic Libraries in South-South, Nigeria. Lack of Automation, lack of training, cost of implementation, lack of skills and irregular internet subscription are some of the major challenges militating against the adoption of AI by Librarians in polytechnic libraries in South-South, Nigeria. It was recommended in the study that the management of polytechnics and Library administrators should place a high priority on AI literacy by investing on training and retraining programme to guarantee that librarians have the abilities to use AI technologies effectively.
