AN EXAMINATION OF THE RIGHTS AND PRIVILEGES OF REGISTERED TEACHERS IN THE PROFESSIONAL REALM USING RELEVANT LAWS

Abstract

This study examines the rights and privileges of registered teachers within the professional realm, with a particular focus on the legal frameworks that govern these aspects in Nigeria. Using a qualitative research design, the study employs document analysis and a systematic literature review to investigate the legislative provisions that safeguard teachers' rights and the privileges afforded by professional registration. Specifically, the research analyzes key rights such as the right to practice as a professional, fair employment, professional development, ethical protection, and competitive remuneration. The study also explores privileges including professional recognition, career growth, job mobility, legal support, and influence in policy-making. Similarly, the study examines the challenges faced by teachers in exercising their rights, including difficulties with policy enforcement, salary inequities, job instability, and discrimination. Secondary data from legal documents, policy reviews, and academic sources, including reports from national and international bodies like UNESCO, the International Labour Organization (ILO), and the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), are analysed. The findings emphasize the significant legal protections for registered teachers, while highlighting the persistent challenges in enforcing these rights. The study concludes that while policies exist to protect the rights and privileges of registered teachers, weak implementation and enforcement hinder their effectiveness. The study recommends, among others, that strengthening the enforcement of existing laws, improving teachers' compensation, and enhancing professional development opportunities will ensure the protection of teachers' rights and the overall quality of education.
