EXPLORING THE EFFECT OF LEADERSHIP STYLE ON CHANGE MANAGEMENT IN SPORTS ORGANIZATIONS: A CASE STUDY OF THE NATIONAL SPORTS COMMISSION, NIGERIA
Abstract
Leadership plays a critical role in the development and governance of sports in Nigeria, particularly within the National Sports Commission. This study examines the impact of leadership styles on sports policy implementation, infrastructure development, and athlete performance. Utilizing an exploratory research design and secondary data sources, the study identifies key challenges such as leadership instability, weak strategic planning, and inadequate stakeholder engagement, which have hindered the growth of Nigeria’s sports sector. Findings suggest that inconsistent leadership has led to fragmented policy execution, misallocation of funds, and governance inefficiencies. However, cases where leadership was stable, transparent, and strategic demonstrated improved sports infrastructure, enhanced athlete performance, and increased global competitiveness. The study recommends the adoption of merit-based leadership selection, structured governance reforms, and enhanced stakeholder collaboration to drive sustainable sports development. Strengthening policy implementation and promoting leadership training for sports administrators can foster a more effective and accountable sports management system.
