THE IMPACT OF CRIME ON ECONOMIC HARDSHIP IN OYO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract
This study investigates the impact of crime on economic hardship in Oyo State, Nigeria, using a comprehensive survey research design. The objectives are to assess the prevalence of crime, evaluate economic conditions, examine the correlation between crime rates and economic hardship, and propose policy recommendations. Utilizing a sample of 400 respondents selected through stratified random sampling, the study employs quantitative analysis methods, including descriptive statistics and regression modeling. The findings reveal a significant positive correlation between crime rates and economic hardship, with higher crime rates exacerbating unemployment, poverty, and financial instability. The study identifies social disorganization and ineffective law enforcement as critical mediating factors. Comparative analysis with existing literature supports these findings, emphasizing the bidirectional relationship between crime and economic conditions. The study concludes with policy recommendations focused on strengthening law enforcement, promoting economic development programs, fostering community engagement, and improving infrastructure. These measures aim to mitigate the adverse effects of crime on economic hardship and promote sustainable development in Oyo State.
