AN ASSESSMENT OF THE CHALLENGES AND CARE OF THE ELDERLY AMONG THE BIROM COMMUNITY, JOS SOUTH, PLATEAU STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract
This study was conducted within the Birom community of Jos South, Plateau State, Nigeria; it examines the multifaceted challenges faced by the elderly population and evaluates the efficacy of existing care mechanisms. The research provides a comprehensive assessment of the physical, financial, psychological, and social challenges experienced by older adults in this region. It highlights the significant economic vulnerabilities due to limited access to social protection programs, which are common in many developing countries, including Nigeria. The mixed-method approach was utilized for the study through structured questionnaires with qualitative insights from in-depth interviews. This methodology ensures a holistic understanding of older people's lived experiences. The findings reveal a high prevalence of economic instability among the elderly, exacerbated by an inadequate pension system, insufficient government programs, and a reliance on family support, which is often unreliable. Key challenges identified include chronic health conditions, limited access to nutritious food, poverty, social isolation, and age-related discrimination. Recommendations include improving healthcare services, enhancing food security, promoting community-based support mechanisms, and increasing the accessibility of public spaces and transportation. The study calls for financial support programs and economic empowerment opportunities to stabilize the elderly's financial status. It advocates for heightened awareness and advocacy for the rights of older people, addressing discrimination, and fostering inclusion in all societal aspects. Strengthening family support systems and encouraging intergenerational solidarity are also emphasized as critical measures for ensuring adequate care and support for the elderly.
