WORK ETHICS AND ATTITUDINAL CHANGE FOR GREATER PRODUCTIVITY IN TERTIARY EDUCATION IN NIGERIA

Abstract
The challenge of declining productivity in tertiary education in Nigeria is often discussed or tackled with emphasis on physical elements like infrastructure facilities and funding without reference to the role played by ethics and staff attitudinal disposition country. By deploying the techniques of oral interviews and use of relevant literature as primary and secondary sources respectively for information gathering, this paper sets out to unveil the impact of work ethics and attitudinal change as catalysts for greater productivity in tertiary education in Nigeria. The study found that there is a correlation between employees’ attitudinal disposition and institutional productivity such that tertiary educational institutions with low work ethics and attitudinal change suffer low productivity, poor research outcomes and incompetent graduates. The recommendations that have been made in this connection include strengthening the mentoring and monitoring activities on the members of staff for improved work ethics and attitudinal change, deploying stiffer sanctions on culprits of work ethics/poor attitude to work, organizing workshops and seminars aimed at training/retraining of the workforce and increase in motivation of workers for greater productivity.
