PROJECT TEAM MOTIVATION STRATEGIES AND DELIVERY OF PUBLIC BUILDINGS IN ADO EKITI, NIGERIA

Abstract

Results of this study highlight the importance of project-team management practices in determining the outcomes of project delivery of public buildings in Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria. The findings show that more than half of the variance in project performance can be explained by factors that lie under the control of the manager such as team motivation. In particular, motivation was found as the most prevalent predictor, and highly-motivated groups provided significantly higher results. Whereas other factors were positively related to project performance, it did not maintain independent explanatory power after motivation and communication were considered, which is in line with both Nigerian and international studies that highlight the significance of human-resource management and information flow in realizing high-quality project results. Thus, the interventions to enhance motivation among project teams can potentially produce significant changes in the performance of the public buildings project in the area. Additionally, the regression analysis shows that the motivation is a major factor explaining the variation in the project delivery where the correlation coefficient of motivation is 0.682 with R2 of 0.466. Statistical significance of these results implies that recognition, financial incentives, and supportive leadership are important motivation strategies that affect the efficiency, proactiveness, and productivity of project teams significantly. Such strategies assist in the improvement of team performance, which eventually leads to the successful and timely completion of the projects of building the public buildings. The higher determinant of project outcomes was identified to be motivation as opposed to safety and communication which underscores the importance of motivation in project success.
