THE ROLE OF ESTATE MANAGEMENT IN HERITAGE PROPERTY CONSERVATION IN LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
Heritage property conservation is a critical issue in urban areas, especially in rapidly developing cities like Lagos State, Nigeria. This research examines the pivotal role of estate management in preserving Lagos's historical and cultural landmarks amidst modern developmental pressures. The study investigates the strategies and practices employed by estate managers to balance the conservation of heritage sites with the demands of contemporary urbanization. Using a mixed-methods approach, including surveys and interviews with estate managers, conservation experts, and policymakers, the research identifies key challenges such as inadequate funding, regulatory hurdles, and conflicting interests between preservation and development. Findings reveal that effective estate management practices, such as community engagement, adaptive reuse of heritage properties, and comprehensive maintenance plans, are essential for successful conservation efforts. The paper also highlights the need for stronger policy frameworks and increased support for heritage conservation initiatives. By providing insights into current practices and proposing actionable recommendations, this study aims to contribute to more effective heritage property management and conservation strategies in Lagos State.
