IMPACT OF ACADEMIC STAFF UNION OF UNIVERSITY (ASUU) STRIKE ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES: CASE STUDY SOME SELECTED STATES NORTH-EAST OF NIGERIA
Abstract
This research explores the implications of the frequent strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on student academic achievement in Northeastern area of Nigeria. Employing a rigorous survey approach, data was obtained from 2263 university students, evaluating their perspectives of ASUU strikes and attempts to prevent academic interruptions. The statistics suggest that over 64% of respondents experienced ASUU strikes throughout their academic term, greatly impacting their academic success. While 51.7% accepted the strikes' detrimental impacts, 62.3% regarded the government accountable, contrasting with perceptions on ASUU's guilt and negotiating delays. The statistical analysis verified gender connections in student perceptions on the strikes. Moreover, students were especially cautious about recommended ways to reduce strike-induced academic deficits, underlining the necessity for unbroken academic sessions. These findings contradict prior research calling for self-study during strikes. Overall, this study underlines the adverse impact of ASUU strikes on student academic endeavors, contradicting prevailing ideas about mitigating techniques. Recommendations include developing a culture of continuous learning throughout interruptions and demanding government commitment to prevent future academic disruptions. This research adds crucial insights into the complex dynamics surrounding ASUU strikes and their far-reaching implications on student academic paths.
