PRINCIPALS’ COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES ON TEACHER JOB PERFORMANCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN BAYELSA STATE

Abstract

This study investigated Principals’ Communication Strategies and Teacher Job Performance in Secondary Schools in Bayelsa State. In Bayelsa State Secondary Schools, there have been complaints of unhealthy communication between principal and teachers. Five (5) research questions were posited and five corresponding hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The study adopted correlational survey design. A sample size of 1061 representing 30% of the entire population of 3,678 using stratified random sampling technique. A validated instrument tagged “Principals’ Communication Strategies and Teacher Job Performance questionnaire (PCSTJPQ)” was validated and a reliability index of 0.85 was established. Simple percentage were used to analyze the demographic data, while simple and multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the research questions and tested the null hypotheses at 0.05 levels of significance. The findings revealed that all the independent variables have either positive or negative effects on Teacher Job Performance in Secondary Schools. It was inter-alia recommended that; Principals should depend on their face-to-face communication strategy because it will promote teaching and learning in secondary schools, Principals should strongly utilize their written communication strategy, since it has the potential to improve on Teacher Job Performance in secondary school. The study contributed to knowledge as it treated principals’ communication strategies and Teacher Job Performance in secondary schools in Bayelsa State. However, it is suggested that this study should be investigated in other States of Nigeria so as to have a generalization of the study in a wider perspective and replication of the present study is necessary at other forms of institutions life primary and tertiary.
