ASSESSMENT OF QUALITY ASSURANCE IN NIGERIA CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION PROGRAMMES FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF MATHEMATICS AND BASIC SCIENCE IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS

Abstract
The study assessed the role of quality assurance practice in Nigeria Certificate in Education programmes for effective teaching of mathematics and basic science in primary and upper Basic schools in North Central Zone of Nigeria. The population for the study was mathematics and science lecturers from five colleges of education in the North Central Zone of Nigeria. 100 mathematics and science lecturers were sampled from the population of 956 lecturers using multi-stage stratified random sampling. Descriptive survey design was employed for the study. Four research questions were formulated for this research work. The instrument “Quality Assurance Practice Questionnaire” (QAPQ) was used for data collection. The reliability was obtained using Cronbach Alpha with index of 0.89. Mean, standard deviation and percentage were used to analyze the research questions. The study found out that the Quality Assurance Unit has positive impacts on the implementation of Minimum Standards, staff recruitment, teaching and learning process and students admission policy in Colleges of education in the North Central geopolitical Zone of Nigeria. This shows that there is a positive impact of quality assurance on the teaching and learning of Mathematics and Science subjects in the colleges of education. It was recommended that Nigeria government through Nigeria Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) should ensure strict adherence to all the quality assurance strategies by all Colleges of Education in Nigeria.
