INFLUENCE OF FACEBOOK USAGE ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN NIGERIAN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS: A STUDY OF COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, AKWANGA, NASARAWA STATE

Abstract

This study explores the impact of Facebook usage on the academic performance of students at the College of Education, Akwanga, Nigeria. Using a descriptive survey design, it examines usage patterns, perceived academic effects, and demographic differences among 400 students selected via stratified random sampling. Data collection involves a validated questionnaire, analyzed with SPSS using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study aims to identify usage patterns, time spent on Facebook, its effects on study schedules, and activities influencing academics positively or negatively. Variations in usage by gender, age, and study level are also explored. The findings will provide insights for educators, administrators, and policymakers to integrate social media into education effectively while addressing its distractions. Ethical considerations, such as informed consent and confidentiality, are observed throughout. The study seeks to support policy discussions, curriculum development, and digital literacy initiatives to enhance academic performance in tertiary institutions.
