ASSESSMENT OF STAKEHOLDERS PERCEPTION ON THE INTEGRATION OF THE ALMAJIRI SYSTEM INTO THE FORMAL EDUCATION SYSTEM IN NASARAWA STATE

Abstract

This study investigates the perception of stakeholders on the integration of the Almajiri system into formal education in Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. The study made use of almajiris, their parents and teachers as major variables while gender as moderator variable was equally considered. A cross sectional survey research design was adopted. Simple random sampling technique was employed and a total population sample of 255 respondents were used for the study which comprises of Almajiri, their teachers and parents from almajiri schools in Akwanga Local Government Area. The findings of the study revealed that the almajiris, their parents and teacherssupported themodel of integrating traditional Quranic schools within the original location. The result of the hypothesis tested shows that there is no significant difference in the perception of the Almajiris, their parents and teachers on the establishment of a model Almajiri schools to serve as a means of integrating Almajiri education into formal education system. Based on the finding of the study, it was recommended that the almajiris should be provided with opportunities to acquire sound knowledge by the Government and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). This can be achieved by developing the two most acceptable model of integrating almajiris system into the formal system of education. These models are integration of traditional Quranic schools within its original location as a means of integrating almajiri education into formal education system and the integration of basic education into curriculum of established Islamiyya and Ma’ahad schools as a means of integrating almajiris education into formal education system.
