COUNSELLING INTERVENTION: AN INSTRUMENT FOR BEHAVIOUR MODIFICATION AMONG ADOLESCENTS IN NIGERIAN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Abstract

Education is a vital instrument for the development of any nation. This informed the recognition of education as a fundamental right of every child regardless of gender, sex or any other consideration. Despite this plausible objective, our educational system is faced with lingering problems one of which is our adolescents’ behavioral problem proving so difficult for many schools to handle. This informed the researchers’ effort to draw the attention of stakeholders in our educational system to appreciate, take advantage and make use of guidance and counseling in order to tackle such behavioral problems. This includes creating awareness among the stakeholders that counseling can be used to control every behavioral pattern in our schools. A position paper that adopted the cognitive learning theories of Bruner and Gagne, they upheld connection through interaction. Those with problems will know where to go for help just as the government at all levels will see the need to properly set up guidance and counseling units in our schools in order to derive home the desired objective. The thrust of it all is the need for a collective/team approach in order to achieve the common goal of proper upbringing of our children in our school environments.
